West Coast Swing

LogoCMJWCSWhat is West Coast Swing?

Extremely popular in the USA & UK and growing across Australia since we launched our “Coasters” classes in 2006, West Coast Swing is characterised as a linear dance, emphasising connection between the partners as well as improvisation and personal interpretation of the music, giving it an elastic, smooth & sexy look & feel.

This style can be danced slow and sexy, smooth and sophisticated, or fast and rhythmically to most types of music, including Top40, R’n’B, classic Swing, Jazz, Funk, Blues, Pop, Country & Western and Hip Hop.

Where Can I Learn?

CMJ runs weekly West Coast Swing classes on Monday nights at Club Willoughby, 26 Crabbes Avenue, Willoughby.

The first beginner class starts at 7.30pm, followed by social dance time and an intermediate class at 8.50pm – everyone’s welcome, especially first timers!  Plus, if we have enough beginners, we usually run an informal optional second beginner class whilst the intermediate class is on in the other room, giving you a chance to refine your techniques and practise your moves.

Our beginner classes work on a five week rotation, sometimes followed by a sixth week of recap – you don’t have to start on Week 1, but it’s great if you can, as that way you’ll be starting with the easier moves and increasing your challenge each week. See below for the syllabus dates. Beginners, we recommend you do at least two rounds of the syllabus before stepping up to intermediate.

Beginner and Intermediate teachers include West Coast Swing experts Amanda, Anthony, Dani, Kate, Michelle, Nathan, Peter and Reasmey, ably assisted by Adam, Ed, Grant, Julie, Lidia, Lilian, Lachlan, Luci and Will.
